BISMARCK -- Minot High received five first place votes and is the pick to win the WDA regular season girls' soccer title this spring, according to conference coaches. While the Majettes were the overwhelming pick to claim the top spot, the real race may be for second with three teams virtually deadlocked. Bismarck High and Legacy each collected 26 points and one first place vote. Century was just a point behind in voting in fourth (25 points). Rounding out the poll was Mandan (16); Jamestown (11) and St. Mary's (8). Teams received six points for a first place vote; five for second place; four for third place; three points for fourth place; two points for fifth place; and one point for sixth place. Coaches did not include their team in voting. The annual poll was conducted by WDA Executive Secretary Matt Mullally.
This will be the 25th season the WDA has sponsored the sport. Matches will get underway on Friday, April 9, weather permitting. In addition to seven teams playing a varsity schedule, Dickinson Williston and TMCHS Belcourt are fielding soccer programs. The trio will play a JV schedule with plans of moving to varsity competition in the coming years.
The WDA Tournament will be held May 25 and 27 and hosted by Bismarck St. Mary's. The top two regular season finishers in the standings automatically qualify for the state tournament and will be placed in the WDA Tournament title match. Two other teams, which win a state qualifier, will also compete at the state tournament. This year's state event is hosted by Grand Forks, June 3-5.
