Season in Review (AI Generated)

The 2026 girls' soccer season in the Western Dakota Association (WDA) showcased fierce competition and remarkable individual performances, culminating in a thrilling state tournament. Mandan, the defending champion, entered the season as the favorite, earning six first-place votes in the preseason poll. However, despite a strong regular season, their quest for back-to-back titles ended in just one victory short. The Braves fell to EDC champ Fargo Shanley, 3-0, in the state title match in Bismarck.

Mandan finished the regular season with an impressive 15-0 WDA record and a 17-1 overall mark, establishing themselves as a dominant force. Their success was driven by standout players, including Sarah Helderop, who later earned the title of state senior athlete of the year. She finished her career with over 100 goals. Coach Aaron McElwee also garnered recognition, being named state coach of the year for his leadership throughout the season.

In the state tournament held at Bismarck's Sanford Sports Complex, Mandan advanced to the finals after a narrow 1-0 victory over Fargo Davies in the quarterfinals and a high-scoring semifinal win against Grand Forks Red River, finishing 5-3. The Braves faced Fargo Shanley in the championship match, but were unable to replicate their previous success, falling 3-0 to give Shanley their first state title since 2019.

Minot also had a strong showing this season, finishing with a 12-2 WDA record and a 14-3 overall record. They made it to the semifinals before losing to Mandan and later secured a fifth-place finish by defeating Fargo Davies 1-0. Minot North made their state tournament debut this year, finishing with a 10-5 WDA record, which marked a significant achievement for the program.

Jamestown and Bismarck Century had notable seasons as well, with Jamestown finishing 9-5 in the WDA and Bismarck Century rounding out the standings at 7-8. Both teams demonstrated resilience and talent, contributing to the competitive landscape of the WDA.

As the season came to a close, the All-Tournament team highlighted the talents across the conference. Alongside Mandan's Helderop, Sierra Gustavsson, and Arianna Lindsley, players from Fargo Shanley, Grand Forks Red River, and Minot High were recognized for their exceptional performances throughout the tournament.

The 2026 girls' soccer season in the WDA was marked by thrilling matches, standout athletes, and the emergence of new talent, setting the stage for an exciting future. With the competitive spirit alive and well, teams will be looking to build on this year’s experiences as they prepare for the next season.
