BISMARCK – The 47th season of WDA girls’ golf play tees off later this week. The season includes nine regular season events plus the West Region and Class A tournaments. Here’s a look at 12 golfers to follow this season.
Brynn Anderson, Bismarck High: The senior was one of the top scorers for the Demon program last season, carding the top score on five occasions. Anderson had a season-best 87 at the East-West Classic Jamestown. She brings a positive attitude to the team and the young golfers in BHS’ fold look up to her.
Ashlen Larsen, Bismarck Century: The freshman is one of the talented underclassmen in the conference. As an eighth grader, Larsen finished with a scoring average in the mid-90s in varsity play, and that average will only improve in the seasons to come. She is a dedicated player who is always on the course, working on her game. Her out-going personality and energy and enthusiasm for golf make her a key part of the Patriots’ program.
Peyton Kalanek, Bismarck Legacy: The junior is the veteran on young Saber team looking to take another step forward in 2025. Kalanek has been a varsity letterwinner since her seventh grade season and last year had a productive season which included qualifying for the state tournament individually. She carded six rounds in the 80s. Golf is a big part of her summer where she teaches lessons to youth players for the DJGA and takes part in tournaments.
Lola Huber, Bismarck St. Mary’s: The senior is coming off a breakout junior campaign for the Saints which included medalist honors at two tournaments and finishing in the top 10 in several more. Huber also earned all-WDA honors for a second-straight season and is one of just four all-state returners. Her game has steadily improved since her freshman season and she finished with a scoring average in the upper 70s last year. Long off the tee is one of her strengths, but she’s also showed skill with her short game. Huber is quite dedicated to her sport, playing and practicing nearly every day in the summer and participating in tournaments.
Kyndall Peterson, Dickinson: The senior had an impressive junior year for Dickinson which included all-conference honors and scoring average in the mid-80s. Peterson has been playing varsity tournaments the past five seasons and is one of the long-ball hitters in the conference. With each year she has become a consistent scorer for the program. She’s a multi-sport athlete, playing hockey and softball as well.
Belle Sjostrom, Jamestown: The senior is coming off a solid season for the Blue Jays which included qualifying individually for the state tournament. Sjostrom’s efforts at the region tournament also helped the team advance to the Class A Tournament. Her strengths include a powerful swing that gains her good distance off the tee and her course management. Rodeo and soccer are other sports she’s involved in, showing her athleticism.
Brooklyn Monteith, Mandan: The senior has steadily improved her scoring average for a talented Braves’ program which has earned both WDA and state tournament titles during her time on varsity. Monteith earned all-WDA and all-state honors in each of the past two seasons and her talents will again be leaned on as Mandan looks to challenge again for conference and state titles. One of her strengths is her mental game which allows her to bounce back quickly from a bad shot or hole and get back on track. She also has a great attitude and work ethic.
Katie Thomas, Minot High: The senior is the top returning scorer for the Majettes which return nearly all of its varsity lineup. Thomas has been in the program since seventh grade and the last three seasons in the varsity lineup. Her scoring average last season was 90 with a top score of 86. The two-year captain has a great sense of humor which her players and coaches enjoy. She has the ability to leave a bad hole behind her and refocus her energy to the next one.
Emersyn Kopp, Minot North: The senior had an impressive junior season for the Sentinels which included a pair of medalist honors, including the West Region Tournament. This marks Kopp’s fourth season of varsity play. She was an all-WDA performer and helped the program qualify for the Class A Tournament for the first time. Kopp’s all-around game has enabled her to post a scoring average in the low 80s. She is part of veteran team expected to challenge for meet victories this season. Kopp also plays tennis for Minot North.
Akealyes Azure, TMCHS (Belcourt): The senior picked up the game just a season ago for the Braves program. Her athleticism coupled with her coachability enabled her to put instruction into results on the course and is poised to have a breakout 2025 season. She is also a standout-out basketball player and possesses a great attitude and strong leadership skills.
Harlee Olson, Watford City: The junior has been playing varsity since seventh grade and has taken steady strides in her play. Olson been the Wolves’ No. 1 golfer since her freshman season and her dedication, leadership and competitive spirit make her an invaluable part of the program and a role model for the younger players.
Kali Larsen, Williston: The senior is the top-returning scorer for the Coyotes with a 97 average. That was a dozen stroke improvement from the previous season. That earned her most improved player honors. Not bad for a player who picked up the game just a few seasons ago. She has played in DJGA events this summer to gear up for the season and she’s part of a veteran group that features four seniors.
