WDA dives into its 50th season in the pool

BISMARCK - This marks the 50th season of WDA-sponsored girls’ swimming and diving, and like the first 49 campaigns, the conference pool will feature an abundance of premier talent chasing championships and state berths. Defending champion Bismarck Century returns a loaded lineup after sweeping both the WDA and state championship meets a year ago. State runner-up Bismarck Legacy is poised to push the Patriots again with a young, but talented lineup of its own. Meanwhile, several other conference squads boast returning standouts capable of reaching the podium, including talent-rich Minot High. The postseason push begins Nov. 6–7 when Minot North hosts the WDA Championships. The season wraps up Nov. 13–14 at the Hulbert Aquatic Center in West Fargo for the North Dakota State Championships. Bismarck High Demons Key Returners: Madeline VerDouw, Sr.; (All-State, All-WDA), Aria Eberle, Fr.; Aubrey Vatnsdal, Sr.; Kennedy Ness, Fr.; Team Strengths: High-end, championship-caliber talent leads the way. VerDouw is the reigning state champion and conference record-holder in the breaststroke. Surrounding her is a core of tested returners in Eberle, Vatnsdal, and Ness who are primed to take the next competitive leap and generate critical team points during postseason meets. Areas to Develop: Converting dryland gains into pool speed. The Demons are relying on dedicated weight-room work to shave fractions of seconds, build endurance across long events, and generate added explosive power both through the water and off the diving board. Bismarck Century Patriots Key Returners: Molly Osadchy, Jr.; (All-State, All-WDA), Joelle Knudson, Jr.; (All-State, All-WDA), Brooklyn Richards, Sr.; (All-State, All-WDA), Aubrey Caster, Sr.; (All-WDA), Haley Dockter, Molly Zeltinger, So. Ready to Breakthrough: Ivy Aisenbrey, 8th; Clara Mattern, Fr. Team Strengths: Exceptional balance and proven title-meet pedigree make the Patriots a formidable force once again. Century showcases imposing depth in the sprint freestyle events and the 100 breaststroke, anchored by a multi-event All-State core. Even after graduating key seniors, the Patriot tradition is built to reload quickly, with a fresh wave of contributors stepping into high-leverage scoring lanes. Areas to Develop: Building out point-scoring depth across the middle distances and specialty strokes. The Patriots will aim to bolster their lineup in the 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, and 100 butterfly to maintain their edge in multi-team invitationals and championship finals. Bismarck Legacy Sabers Key Returners: Brinley Steele, Jr.; (All-State, All-WDA), Lilyana Hochhalter, Jr.; (All-State, All-WDA), Nora Sears, So.; (All-State, All-WDA), Ellie Lacher, Jr.; Grace Upgren, Jr.; Ashlyn Brendel, Sr.; Cambria Bachmeier, Fr.; Ally Huber, So.; Morgan Hocker, Sr.; Zoe Reis, Fr. Team Strengths: Roster continuity and elite high-end firepower. Coming off runner-up finishes to Century at both the WDA and ND State Championships, the Sabers return three All-State anchors and virtually their entire varsity scoring lineup. Legacy boasts exceptional depth across the butterfly, backstroke, and freestyle events, providing the firepower needed to mount a serious title charge. Areas to Develop: Shoring up scoring potential in the 100 breaststroke and short sprint freestyle heats. Developing a second tier of qualifiers in those disciplines will be key to neutralizing rival advantages and maximizing championship meet points. Dickinson Midgets Key Returners: Addie Wax, Jr.; (All-WDA), Makenna Tippett, Jr.; (All-WDA), Molly Ellerkamp, Sr.; Clancy Meyer, Jr.; Samantha Paintner Team Strengths: Traditional power in the freestyle lanes anchors the lineup. With All-WDA selections Wax and Tippett setting the pace, the Midgets remain particularly dangerous across both the sprints and the distance grinds, providing a dependable foundation for individual points and relay seeding. Areas to Develop: Expanding event diversity beyond the freestyle races. Dickinson enters the season focused on filling scoring lanes in the non-freestyle disciplines—especially the 200 individual medley. With an influx of eager newcomers, the coaching staff will look to cultivate stroke versatility and round out the roster's multi-event depth. Jamestown Blue Jays Key Returners: Sawyer Moser, 7th; Sophie Gilbertson, Fr.; Adelina Domkova, 8th; Kylee Klabo, 7th Team Strengths: A dedicated core with significant varsity experience. Moser, Gilbertson, Domkova, and Klabo logged valuable competition reps a season ago, giving the Blue Jays dependable leadership in the water. The team's primary focus remains on refining stroke technique, sharpening dive execution, and dropping times as the season progresses. Areas to Develop: Roster depth. Like many programs building up their ranks, Jamestown faces the perennial challenge of filling all heats and event disciplines. Maximizing dual-meet scoring will depend on newcomer recruitment and accelerating the learning curve for developing swimmers. Of Note: Mya Wimer takes the helm as the new head coach of the Blue Jays. Mandan Braves Key Returners: Kylie Brew, Sr.; (All-WDA), Ava Francis, So. (All-WDA), Catherine Lindsey, Fr.; Emma Masseth, Jr. Team Strengths: A dedicated work ethic and an influx of eager young talent. Led by returning All-WDA honorees Brew and Francis alongside veterans Lindsey and Masseth, the Braves feature a solid core to anchor dual meets. Mandan projects to be particularly competitive across the backstroke, breaststroke, and sprint freestyle heats. Areas to Develop: Long-distance endurance and rebuilding the diving well. Developing consistent point scorers in the 200 and 500 freestyle will be essential for team scoring, while recruiting and sharpening talent on the 1-meter diving board remains a key program priority. Minot High Majettes Key Returners: Gracyn Bergan, Sr. (All-State, All-WDA), Kirby Quam, Jr., (All-WDA), Emily Dunstan, Sr., (All-WDA) Team Strengths: Frontline star power and a storied championship tradition. Senior diver Gracyn Bergan leads the charge after winning the WDA title and finishing as the state runner-up a season ago. Alongside her, multi-event state qualifiers Kirby Quam and Emily Dunstan provide proven scoring ability across several disciplines. Deep rosters have long been the hallmark of the Majettes, and this year’s squad features another balanced mix across the board and lanes.Areas to Develop: Converting regular-season experience into higher podium finishes in November. Bergan has her sights set squarely on capturing the individual state diving crown to cap her prep career. Quam is primed to climb into top-tier state finals placings, while Dunstan is targeting top-eight championship final finishes in both of her primary events. Of Note: Wahpeton native Heather Glines takes over the helm as the new head coach of the Majettes. Minot North Sentinels Key Returners: Macey Blake, Sr.; Ellia Gemar, Sr.; Chloe Kraft, Jr.; Olivia Lantz-Gagne, Sr. Team Strengths: High participation numbers and rapid program growth. Entering just their second season of varsity competition, the Sentinels boast a large, energetic roster eager to build a lasting foundation. While youthful, the lineup features rising talent—paced by Blake, Gemar, and Kraft—capable of challenging for top-16 scoring spots and advancing to state finals sessions. Areas to Develop: Building week-to-week consistency. With so many underclassmen navigating the demands of varsity dual meets and multi-team invitationals, maintaining technical composure and steady time drops from meet to meet will be the primary benchmark for growth. Williston Coyotes Key Returners: Audrey Tofte, Fr.; Norah Pierce, So.; Jolee Floyd, Fr.; Lenora Arnold Team Strengths: Strong participation numbers and a promising talent pipeline. The Coyotes boast a large roster packed with enthusiastic newcomers, establishing a solid developmental base that bodes well for the future if the young group continues to progress together. Returning veterans Tofte, Pierce, Floye, and Arnold provide steady leadership in and out of the water. Areas to Develop: Rebuilding varsity relay lineups. After graduating nine seniors from last season's squad, Williston must replace considerable meet-tested experience in critical scoring relays. Finding dependable new splits and establishing fast relay chemistry early in the season will be crucial.
